Notes from my 1991 Owner's manual re operation of the DIS

Summary of how to use the Driver Information Display

These notes concern the operation of the driver information system fitted to 1991 Toronados without the Visual Information Center (VIC).

The DIS has 15 buttons: 0-9, odo/trip, display on/off, trip reset, system monitor and reset/enter.

Odo/trip: Press to change the odometer to display trip miles, press again for total miles. Use trip reset when displaying trip miles to reset to zero.

Display on off: Press once to turn off the info center, again to switch off the odo/trip display and a third time to return to normal operation.

Trip reset: While displaying trip miles, use to reset the display to zero.

1 Econ: Average and instantaneous fuel economy. First press average, second instant, third back to average and so on.

2 Options: Displays the compass. To reset (you need to do this if you have disconnected the battery for any length of time or if it is out of adjustment, you will need to know the direction of true north), select the options button and press reset/enter. You should get the instruction to drive the car in a circle, keep doing this very slowly, less than 10 mph, (I don't know if it matters if you go clockwise or anti-clockwise, I always go clockwise) until you get the instruction to bring the car to a halt pointing north, when pointing north press reset/enter again and wait briefly while the compass is recalibrated.

3 Fuel/range: Press once for amount of fuel used since last reset, press again for range based on fuel currently in tank and recent economy. Note, this does not reset when you refuel the car, you must reset it manually.

4 Speed: Average speed (since last reset).

5 Eng data: Press repeatedly as follows: 1 -> Engine rpm, 2-> coolant temperature, 3-> battery voltage, 4-> Oil life left (%), while displaying oil life press reset/enter to reset to 100% (only if you have changed the oil...). Note, if you have disconnected the battery or the date is wrong, reset the date before you reset the oil life index as it looks at the number of days since you last changed the oil as well as miles and number of starts. When the oil life is low you will get a warning about it. Note also the oil life index does not check the oil level, nor does it take into account high levels of dust etc.

6 Date: Date. To reset, display the date, press reset/enter, press the month as a number (Jan=1, Dec=12), press reset/enter, press day (1-31), press reset/enter, enter year (last two digits) press reset/enter.

7 Dist: Distance to destination. To set, press reset/enter, enter the distance (up to 9999) and press reset/enter again.

8 ETA: Estimated time of arrival. (Works while you have a trip in progress).

9 Elap time: Elapsed time since last reset (by pressing reset while displaying this information, it counts the time the ignition is on).

0 E/M Selects english or metric displays.

When entering numeric data, the keys 0-9 are used to enter the digits, at other times they have the other function marked on them.

System monitor: Press to turn off any warning messages being displayed currently or to cycle through stored problems. When there are none, the message "monitored systems ok" is displayed. This covers things like low washer fluid or door open, it does not cover the fault codes accessed through the diagnostics mode (here).

Reset/enter: Used with other displays to reset to zero, enter a data value or recalibrate.
